Jacek's Faworki
Faworki – a traditional Polish carnaval dessert - were served (by Joanna and Jacek) at our dinner on January 27, 2006, at Gail and Chas Benedict's house.
FAWORKI (pronunciation: “favorkee”)
makes approximately two plates of faworki
preparation time - about 2 hrs
12 oz. flour
1 oz. soft butter
4 egg yolks
5 oz. sour cream
2 TB whisky or vodka
cooking oil
powdered sugar

Mix all ingredients (except for oil and sugar) and make dough. Cut off small pieces and use a rolling-pin (or you can replace it with a good wine bottle ;-) to make very thin sheets of dough. Cut them into 6 x 1.5 inch-strips. In the center of each strip make a 2 inch-cut parallel to the longer edge of the strip. Brandish one end of the strip trough the cut and make a twist. Deep-fry in boiling oil until faworki turn yellowish-gold. Dry them on a paper towel to remove the excess of oil. Finally, dredge faworki with powdered sugar.
